About

This space is generally reserved for a short introduction, however I'm going to use it as a love letter to the font Roboto Mono. I know, it's odd, but I promise it will all make sense in the end (at least I hope so). This will also explain why my name is Julia in some of my contact information.

In the world of the typed word, there are 4 major font types: Serif, Sans Serif, Display, and Script. All of them have their uses, however the Sans Serif font type has become the default on the web because it makes pages more accessible for people with reading difficulties. This font type is less crowded, and generally easier to read (e.g example vs example), however, because of it's simplicity it relies on context for some letter differentiation. Take the word "Illusion", with a Sans Serif font, this word would look like this: "Illusion". From context we can discern what the word is, but the l and I look almost indistinguishable. This is where Roboto Mono shines, not only does it provide a way to differentiate between those two letters, but this font is also easy on the eyes, accessible, and a great step towards inclusive design.

Going back to my name - it is a version of Julia much like Yulia or Julya or any of the other variations I have yet to encounter. I love my name, but I would never expect it to take precedence over accessibility and inclusive design. That said, I do not like being called Lulia which happens when well-intentioned people presume I've forgotten to capitalize lulia and decide to help out. Julia then becomes a happy middle, it's close enough to my name but the letter j is distinct enough that it cannot be mistaken for another letter.

My name is Iulia, Julia if you're Sans Serif, and welcome to my page! Thank you for reading and if you've made it this far, yes, this page does use the Roboto Mono font.
